Quercy and the Agenais are lovely unspoilt areas of South West France to the north of Toulouse, in and to the south of the valley of the river Lot. Close by you will find wonderful and inexpensive wines; Cahors, Bergerac, Côtes de Gascogne, and less well known ones like Madiran, Buzet, Côtes de Frontonnais, Côtes de Duras and Montbazillac. There are the French foods; the area grows superb fruit; cherries, apples, pears, melons, peaches, nectarines, and strawberries. Agen is Europe's plum and prune growing centre, and paté de foie gras is a local farm staple. There are the sights, too; glorious wooded countryside, lovely villages, pretty bastide towns and villages with their colonnaded market squares, chateaux, the valleys of the Dordogne, Lot and Tarn rivers. And it's so easy to get to South West France from the UK. The new A20 motorway (much of it toll-free) brings you through the centre of France to Cahors, or you can take an overnight ferry to Brittany and then drive down to the south-west via Bordeaux. Plus flying here is cheap. Ryanair fly from Stansted into Bergerac airport, and FlyBe fly into Bergerac and Toulouse from several UK airports, and also have a daily flight from Birmingham to Toulouse. If you have a house here you can browse in village markets, laze in the sunshine, walk, ride, cycle or canoe, do whatever you like. Perhaps that's why they say people in the country around Toulouse live longer than anywhere else in Europe. We know it's why we love to live here ourselves. |
